Samsung just announced a new series of ultra-fast, durable, and reliable UHS-I PRO Ultimate memory cards built for photographers and content creators. These SD and microSD memory cards are perfect for DSLR cameras, drones, Nintendo Switch consoles, or anything else with an SD card slot that needs the fastest speeds possible.
While the company revealed some new PRO Plus cards earlier this year, the all-new Ultimate series comes with blazing fast read speeds of up to 200MB/s, write speeds of up to 130MB/s, and are as durable as ever. That's identical to the write speeds of the PRO Plus cards, with slightly faster reads. As usual, these memory cards are optimized for video recording, even at 4K, and have a V30 rating for sustained speeds during data transfers. The speeds are some of the highest we've seen in SD cards, but they pale in comparison to any modern solid state drive — most SATA SSDs max out at around 560 MB/s, while NVMe drives can be several times faster than that.
These are for you if you want to capture and store large amounts of HD content. In a press release, Samsung said, "These high speeds, regardless of capacity, allow for the seamless transfer of heavy-duty files such as 4K ultra-high definition (UHD) and Full HD (FHD) video with Video Speed Class 30 (V30) support. That means a game can load in as quickly as 31.5 seconds, 200 photos can transfer from PC to card in as fast as .6 seconds, and one 1.3GB movie can transfer from PC to card in as swiftly as 11.2 seconds."
Considering these are Samsung's new Ultimate line for professionals, they'll need to be able to handle any workflow. And while speeds are important, reliability and durability are equally essential. That's why content creators will be happy to learn about multiple protections in place for safer data storage. For example, the new PRO Ultimate cards feature enhanced "error correction code" (ECC) engines and improved write-and-erase cycle durability. Samsung claims they'll last plenty long thanks to wear-out protection of around 10,000 swipes, X-ray and magnetic protection, and can operate in extreme temperatures ranging from -13°F to 185°F.
Then, those using the Ultimate series in drones or other extreme situations can rest easy thanks to water protection for nearly 72 hours up to two meters in depth, drop-proof protection, and more. MicroSD sizes include 128, 256, or 512GB, while larger SD cards are available in those same configurations along with 64GB. The microSD models are available today starting at $21, while the SDXC cards won't hit shelves until October.
