The year-old Surface Pro 9 now includes 90 days (or 30 GB) of free 5G service, courtesy of T-Mobile. This free trial is only available in the U.S. and requires a Surface Pro 9 with 5G tablet—the standard Surface Pro 9 does not have a cellular modem and cannot connect to 5G networks. You do not need to be a T-Mobile customer to redeem this trial.

If you shelled out for the expensive Surface Pro 9 with 5G, there's a decent chance that you already have a 5G PC service plan. Still, this is a very generous offer, especially if you plan on buying a Surface Pro 9 with 5G during Black Friday. The Surface Pro 9 with 5G is already on sale at Amazon and Best Buy, but the best discounts won't arrive until Thanksgiving week.

To activate T-Mobile's free 5G service, open the Network settings on your Surface Pro 9 with 5G and select "Connect with eSIM." Click the T-Mobile icon, choose "Get Connected," and you'll be redirected to the T-Mobile website. From here, log into your T-Mobile account (or create a new one) and you'll be guided through the free trial setup process. In other words, follow the T-Mobile PC service instructions until you're hit with the free trial offer. You must set up the free trial on your Surface Pro 9 with 5G, as it won't work on another computer.

Your free T-Mobile 5G trial will expire after 90 days of service or 30 GB of cellular data consumption (whatever comes first). For this reason, you may want to avoid data-hungry websites (YouTube, Netflix, etc) or large downloads while using the free cellular service. Activity on Wi-Fi networks will not contribute to the 30 GB cellular data limit.

T-Mobile's free 5G service offer is available today. It's only available in the U.S. and requires a Surface Pro 9 with 5G tablet. We've asked the company if this free trial auto-renews and will update this article when we receive an answer. For reference, T-Mobile's cellular service for tablets starts at just $10. You can also get a free T-Mobile trial for your smartphone if you're thinking of switching over.
